Sewing Mania!

I want this book!

I picked up another hobby! I was looking at all the neat felt dolls people make based on comics, TV shows and video games and I just wanted to be able to make that stuff too. Only catch is that it involves sewing. Last time i really sewed anything hand or with machine (besides my crochet projects lately) was back in 6th & 7th grade Home Ec. class. I decided that I can learn via You Tube videos (I love You Tube for learning things like this!) I wanted to start with making things out of felt, but as luck would have it I ended up starting with "regular" fabric.

My awesome Husband got me a sewing machine for valentines day! I didn't use it on this project though as I was worried about the fur fabric clogging up the machine. It's a Brother CS- 6000i and I can't wait to start the projects I have planned for it!

I found a simple pattern online. I wasn't able to find corduroy fabric at Jo-Ann's so I got a yard or so of a brown fur type fabric.  While at Jo-Ann's I also bought  supplies for sewing. I bought pins, needles, threads, fabric scissors,  a seam ruler and ripper, etc. Lots of stuff needed to start sewing! I then started with the Chewie project. I printed and cut out the pattern then pinned it to my fabric and cut the pieces out and started to sew. I think since this fabric was so furry, it was able to hide most of my mistakes since you can't see the seams due to so much fur being in the way. It was a fun first project to get back into sewing. I made mistakes and worked with them to figure out ways to fix them and I believe it turned out decently. I'm excited to work on my next project!

My work space.

Waiting to be stuffed.

Decided to make a felt C -3PO.

Lobster Project

Okay, so I have not updated this in a long time so here goes! I was working on quite a few things and just never blogged my projects.

I bought a lobster pattern off of Etsy to make for my mom-in law last August. She loves Maine and what better to represent Maine but with a lobster! This project took me a while because 1) It was my biggest crochet project 2)There were 2 parts of the lobster that had me a bit stumped. and 3) I'm not very fast at crochet. I worked on the body first which took me some time because I am easily distracted by the internet and that is where I sit to crochet, at my computer.

I worked on the legs, antenna. eyes, and feelers  pretty quickly. Then I got to the parts that slowed me down the most, the lobsters claws and its scaly looking tail. I had to look online to try and figure out what the pattern wanted me to do, but I was able to find some help in the form of a heart pattern. I had to join the ends which was a new process for me. Once I started on one of the claws the second was much easier to do. For the "scaly" look of the tail I just had to learn a new stitch and how to join the yarn to a stitch. I was able to do it after a bit and it ended up looking really well!

I decided to make a little felt heart for the lobster to hold since it was Valentines day. I just got some pink felt cut out 2 heart shape pieces and blanket stitched them together. I also cut out felt to spell "Maine" and hot glued them onto the heart. I am really happy with how it all turned out.
